Despite saying on numerous occasions that he wouldn’t, Michael Bay is coming back for Transformers 5. After directing the first four Transformers movies, then saying that he was ready to hand the franchise over to someone else, he’s making one last return.
Bay confirmed all of this in an interview with Rolling Stone: “I’m doing Transformers … 5, is it?” He went on: “Transformers, I still have a great time. It’s fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else.”
When reminded that this sounds a lot like that he said before Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Bay responded, “I know. J.J. [Abrams] told me, ‘You’re the only guy that could do this.’ But it’s time to move on. One more.”
Next: Why Michael Bay Should Go Smaller With Transformers 5
When it was first announced that he was in talks to direct, we made the case that he should consider going smaller for his final Transformers movie. The bombast and bloat of the previous 3 sequels have been just too much. There’s plenty of fun to be had in the Transformers universe, but we don’t have to try and have it all at the same time. The hope is that Bay has learned something over the course of four movies, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Do we still care about Transformers, as a collective movie-loving public? Transformers: Age of Extinction grossed over a billion dollars globally. And as a fan of the first film (and the universe as a whole), I can say that I’d still like to see one great Transformers film come out of Akiva Goldsman’s new Transformers writers room. It’s hard to feel particularly inspired by the last few movies — and as a Michael Bay fan, I’d like to see him take on other projects — but if this is going to be the last ride, let’s all hope that it’s at least good fun.
