In an interview this week, Game of Thrones star Kit Harington addressed the fate of Jon Snow. And while we’re going to talk about whether or not we think he’s being coy (spoiler alert: we do), let’s examine exactly what the still long-locked actor had to say.
“I’ve just hit the ground and gone undercover,” he told Digital Spy when asked about how he’s handled the scrutiny following the season 5 finale. “I’ve tried to do absolutely no press for anything.”
Despite the fact that he has been hounded by everyone with a camera phone within 100 feet for seven months, Harington expressed happiness with the fan response, “?I was hoping that there would be an outcry of ‘why?’ and ‘oh god, no, no’ rather than ‘thank god.’ That was the right reaction as far as I was concerned!”
He then went on to inform all the Game of Thrones fans around the world of the bad news. “People didn’t want me to die, but he’s dead. So there you go, everyone has to get used to it.” As my good friend Joanna Robinson points out at Vanity Fair, this is very similar to comments made recently by co-star Maisie Williams: “I can’t say he’s going to be alive.”
Even as the HBO marketing machine gears up for the stretch run toward Game of Thrones season 6, which debuts in late April, the cast is still in lockstep with a fine game of semantics. Even though he’s on the poster, everyone is acting as if Jon Snow is “deader than dead,” as we’ve been told. Following a spoiler warning below, we’ll talk about this with a little more clarity.
This game of semantics is something the Thrones crew has been playing since the moment Jon Snow was betrayed at Castle Black. Is he dead? Yes, he’s dead. Does that mean that he can’t be resurrected in some way? Nope. Thus far, everyone has been asking the wrong question. It’s not about whether Jon Snow is dead, it’s whether or not he’ll remain dead for very long.
My prediction continues to be that this will all be resolved within the first few episodes of season 6. We’ve seen photos of him on set, in costume as Jon Snow (wearing Stark colors). He’s been hanging around the set for months. For those of us who pay attention to spoilery things, there’s only one of two options: either Jon Snow will be vertical in season 6, or HBO spent a lot of money to throw people off the scent (including the staging of a massive snowy battle).
It’s still likely that Jon will be resurrected by Melisandre, who arrived at Castle Black just in time for his death. There’s also plenty of potential in Bran somehow controlling Jon’s cold, lifeless body. And it’s possible that Harington won’t appear in as much of the show as he has in the past, but to say that he’s only going to be a spectator (something he does in the Digital Spy interview) is really funny.
We’ll all know soon enough, as Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24.
