English Actor Alan Rickman Has Passed Away from Cancer at Age 69

Alan Rickman

Some sad news to report on the same morning as the Academy Awards nominations. Actor Alan Rickman has died at the age of 69, after a short fight with cancer. This news also comes a few days after the death of legendary musician and actor David Bowie, who also passed away from cancer at age 69. Rickman was already a prominent actor on stage in the 80's, but rose to prominence with unforgettable on screen roles like Hans Gruber in the original Die Hard, Metatron in Dogma, Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest and of course Snape from the Harry Potter series. The BBC reports the news directly from his family. "The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends."

Rickman was a very talented actor, beloved for both is stage and screen performances. In addition to the roles mentioned, Rickman appeared in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Sense and Sensibility as Colonel Brandon, the voice of Marvin in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Disney's Alice in Wonderland, Lee Daniels' The Butler as Ronald Reagan, CBGB, A Little Chaos and Eye in the Sky. Rickman was born in London, and started out in theatre, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and eventually on TV dramas like "The Barchester Chronicles" in the 1980s. No Academy Awards, but he did win a Golden Globe.

It's always sad to report on the death of an actor not only loved as a person, but loved for all of his roles, too.
