The Predator Sequel Has a Script. But Do Audiences Still Want This?

Predator

If you weren’t already aware, Shane Black (who wrote the Lethal Weapon movies, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and most notably wrote and directed Iron Man 3) has been working on a sequel to the original Predator with screenwriter Fred Dekker.

The project, in development since last summer, now has a completed script. Dekker, who co-wrote 1987’s The Monster Squad with Black, announced on Facebook (via AVPGalaxy.net) that the script is finished and turned in. Back in 2014, Black told Collider that the Predator project is a sequel, not a reboot and stated “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?” and described this sequel as “inventive.”

Producer John Davis, also speaking with Collider, went on to say “…the writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’”

So everyone on board seems really excited about this but that’s a given…they’re the ones creating it. What about audiences?

It’s been almost 30 years since the original Predator…and the big question is whether the appeal is still there or not. 2010’s Predators, directed by Nimrod Antal, was supposed to be the studio’s reboot of the franchise and while it was a modest success at the box office ($120 million with a $40 million budget) and wasn’t horribly received, there just wasn’t enough oomph to it or eagerness from fans to justify more and it’s been almost six years since.

Black and Dekker (ha) heading this sequel could make all the difference this time around, maybe. Black was brought on to help work out some kinks in the original 1987’s Predator, which helped land him the role as Hawkins. He’s also a veteran writer and handled mega-blockbuster Iron Man 3 fairly well. Partnering with Dekker means the project is in the hands of two guys who’ve been around long enough to maybe know how to handle this thing well.

There are hardly any details known about the project other than what’s been mentioned above. Black is directing a script from Dekker and apparently it’s really awesome. Until we find out more, this one feels like it’s in some sort of limbo where we kinda want to get on board with it and trust those involved (Predators are really badass and cool, let’s not forget), but time gone by and poor entries haven’t done much to reverse waning appeal or remind us why the franchise was so awesome to begin with.
