There’s at least one shot in this Star Trek Beyond trailer that is straight out of Justin Lin’s work in the Fast & Furious franchise. And you know what, that’s just fine. Because on the whole, Beyond looks like the wildest Star Trek ride yet.
There are plenty of people out there — die hard Trekkies that I’ve met — who are not a fan of the actionizing of Trek. It’s about science and exploration, not explosions and time travel. I get that. But what if Lin, alongside writers Doug Jung and Simon Pegg, do take us into the unexplored territory of the universe, only to find some Fast & Furious-style action and a menacing bad guy played by Idris Elba? There’s nothing wrong with that, is all I’m trying to say.
Set to The Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage,” this trailer has a ton of energy and effects that, even though we’re still 7 months away from release, look great. I’ve been a fan of this cast since the first film and they’ve only added more talent with Elba and Kingsman‘s Sofia Boutella. There’s no reason not to be excited.
What’s clear is that this film has a far different visual palette than the previous two. We also know, from various leaks and interviews, that the story of Beyond is set well into the Enterprise crew’s five year journey. The events of this film, so far as we know, take place several years after the events of Star Trek Into Darkness. Which means that there should be a great deal more history between the core group of characters that this story can build upon. There’s also no John Harrison, as far as we know.
The Star Trek Beyond trailer will be in theaters later this week with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The movie will be out on July 22, 2016.
