James Cameron Confirms 'Avatar 2' Will Be Arriving Christmas 2017

James Cameron - Avatar

Get ready. 2017 is going to be a very big year between Episode VIII, Justice League and War for the Planet of the Apes. In December of 2017, they'll be pitting James Cameron's Avatar 2 against Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One adaptation. The next Star Wars movie is already confirmed for May of 2017, and now Cameron has confirmed that Avatar 2 is headed for release in December of 2017. It was initially reported in January that Cameron was delaying the release until 2017 giving them more time to work on the scripts and put plans together. This is going to be a brand new Avatar trilogy, with new ones coming every year.

Here's the latest quote from James Cameron in an interview with the Montreal Gazette (via ComingSoon):

"Christmas of '17 is the target," Cameron confirmed of the expected release of Avatar 2. "At least, that's what we've announced. But I don't consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story. We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It's been about a two-year task. (We've finished) all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we're really poised to start after the first of the year."

Bring on more Na'vi. This quote actually kind of sounds like he's describing Star Wars, with technical plans being important and the bigger "meta-narrative" concept. It's not surprising that Fox, which used to be the studio releasing Star Wars (now it's Disney), is trying to launch their own new massive sci-fi trilogy. And they're completely following the Star Wars blueprint with three "meta-narrative" movies, one right after another. I just hope the story is much more interesting than what we got with the first Avatar, but with all the extra time they've had to work, I'm honestly not that worried. We'll know soon enough. In the meantime, we'll keep watching for more updates and details as we begin the two year countdown until Avatar 2 arrives.
