If you haven't seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens yet, don't watch this video. It's not really a spoiler - it's a small nostalgic moment hidden in the middle of the movie. I'm not going to reveal any more details about the context or if it means anything (it probably doesn't, just a fun nod). If you have seen it, then dive in. This video features Adam Savage from Tested visiting FX legend Phil Tippett at his studio to see how he (re)created the Holochess figures using stop-motion animation. I love the original Holochess scene in A New Hope, and enjoyed this nostalgic reference in the new movie. It's also amusing to see these guys going crazy over practical effects work. And it's sort of a nice tribute to Ray Harryhausen, too. View in full below!
Description from YouTube: "One of the many surprises in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that delighted fans was the appearance of the Dejarik holochess game on the Millennium Falcon. Adam Savage went behind-the-scenes at Tippett Studio to watch Phil Tippett and his team create the stop-motion animation sequence, and learns a secret about how this cameo connects to the original Star Wars! Thanks so much to Tippett Studio for giving us access to this amazing process!" You can see even more close-up photos of the holochess pieces on Tested.com. When I first saw this sequence in the new movie, I thought it was CGI, it's impressive that they actually did this for real. Practical effects can still make a difference, even these days.
