Having now seen the movie Minions twice, along with seeing both of the Despicable Me films, I can say with confidence that I have a pretty firm grasp on the concept of Minions. They are small, yellow and charming. They have been around since the dawn of time, ever-searching for an evil master whom they can serve. They like bananas, they love to party and they each have unique personalities. That’s what I know about the Minions.
While this might seem like plenty of information about these little dudes, there’s one thing that escapes me: how in the hell are they so indestructible? They can be shot, stabbed and exploded and through all of it, they never seem to come to harm. Considering this fact really brings a new perspective to the climax of the Minions film, which involved a plot to blow up a couple of Minions. What’s the point? There’s no tension if they cannot be destroyed!
I’m being silly. These Minions are all in good fun. And they can’t be destroyed because they are animated characters meant for consumption by children. These rules were established long ago. Bug Bunny and Daffy Duck couldn’t die, neither can the Minions.
This all comes in handy in the new short, “Competition,” starring two Minions who let their competitive natures override the safety concerns of working inside a bomb manufacturing facility.
