Let the Midnight Special Trailer Shine Its Light On You

After watching the above trailer for Midnight Special, the latest from filmmaker Jeff Nichols, you’re going to wish you could see it right away. And actually you might be able to see it as early as next week in one of a variety of European countries, if the IMDb dates are still correct. The movie was originally scheduled for release in the US on November 25, but Warner Bros. pushed it back four months, with no reason known.

This is the first studio picture for Nichols, whose indie features include Take ShelterMud and Shotgun Stories, and it’s been described as John Carpenter-like. There’s definitely an ’80s vibe to its sci-fi thriller story of a boy with special powers who may be a weapon or a savior. Maybe like Carpenter’s Starman meets Flight of the Navigator. Or not. It’s an original work, which makes it especially exciting.

Midnight Special also unites Nichols again with his regular collaborator Michael Shannon, putting the actor back in the driver’s seat following his supporting role in Mud. Going by the trailer and my love for Take Shelter, I can say I prefer Nichols working with fantastical material. His aesthetic is otherwise so attuned to nature that stuff like the apocalypse and super-powered kids provide these films with a beautiful contrast.

The movie also stars young Jaeden Lieberher as Shannon’s mysterious son, Adam Driver, who plays the head of a government task force in pursuit of the kid, Sam Shepard as a religious leader who interested in the boy, and Kristen Dunst and Joel Edgerton, who apparently are traveling with the father and son. Shannon’s character’s name is Roy, which I’m hoping is inspired by the main character in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Midnight Special will finally hit the big American screen, where it will shine its loving light down on you, on March 18, 2016.
