The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring plenty of those little indies which deserve the honor and recognition that, this year, they might not receive at the Oscars. We love featuring these because there's always some gems to find. This is an excellent year of nominees, featuring a wide range of some of the best filmmaking of the year. The five Best Features alone: a stop-motion animated feature (Anomalisa), a film shot on an iPhone starring transsexuals (Tangerine), Todd Haynes' film about lesbian lovers (Carol), and the African fighters thriller (Beasts of No Nation). There's so many outstanding people featured this year, so take a look below. Read on for the list of noms.

Tom McCarthy's Spotlight also wins the Robert F. Altman award given to the entire ensemble cast: Billy Crudup, Paul Guilfoyle, Neal Huff, Brian d'Arcy James, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber, Jamey Sheridan, John Slattery and Stanley Tucci. For last year's list of Indie Spirit nominees and winners, which mirrored the Oscars with Birdman winning two big awards, click here. Congrats to all of this year's Independent Spirit Awards nominees. Any and all of the films mentioned above are worth seeing.
My favorite of these nominees: Jason Segel from The End of the Tour playing David Foster Wallace (read my interview with Jason). I'm also really happy to see Beasts of No Nation and noms for Fukunaga everywhere (read my interview with Cary). Deserving nominations for The Diary of a Teenage Girl, one of my favorite gems this year, along with Son of Saul, Mustang and 99 Homes. Carol is a fine film but I'm not the biggest fan, I prefer Brooklyn more. As always, we could argue for hours about everything that is nominated and everything that isn't and should be. Winners announced live on Saturday, February 27th.
