According to the Spanish publisher that owns the rights to translate George R.R. Martin‘s upcoming book The Winds of Winter, from the A Song of Ice and Fire series upon which Game of Thrones is based, revealed this week that Martin’s next will drop sometime next year.
The seemingly reliable source is Alejo Cuervo, editor of Ediciones Gigamesh, the Spanish publisher that owns distributions rights to and will translate TWoW. Cuervo had the following exchange with radio station El Mon RAC1, via Watchers on The Wall:
Radio Host: “The sixth book will be?”
Cuervo: “It is expected next year.”
Radio Host: “In English, but in Spanish when will it be?”
Cuervo: “We have been promised the manuscript in advance of the release in English which we will translate, there won’t be a big difference.”
Radio Host: “But you are equally sure it will be next year?”
Cuervo: “Well, let’s see, confident…but a meteor could fall.”
Barring some sort of cataclysmic event, we should be able to safely expect The Winds of Winter sometime in 2016.
This further reinforces my own theory, which I posited at the end of Game of Thrones season 5. During one of the final episode of A Storm of Spoilers, our podcast for book readers, I along with my co-hosts Joanna and Dave developed a theory that a lot of what David Benioff and Dan Weiss were doing with the show in season 5, especially with regard to storylines in Winterfell and Dorne, was stalling for George. Despite the fact that a few storylines pushed past where the books are, nothing major was really revealed (unless you count the mostly-doomed situation surrounding Stannis Baratheon). And from what we know about season 6 thus far, quite a lot of material is left from the fourth and fifth books in Martin’s series. Could the production be slowing down the narrative a bit to give George enough time to release the next book?
Absolutely. Yes.
My bets are still on the fact that The Winds of Winter will be released prior to the airing of season 6. This particular piece of news only has me doubling down on said theory. And if it doesn’t happen by the season’s debut, I would expect it to drop within the span of the first few episodes. 2016 is a long year, and it’s going to be late April before Game of Thrones begins airing new episode. It’s far more than likely that we’ll be finding out Jon Snow’s fate from a book rather than a TV show.
