What’s more depressing than the housing crisis that caused the economic collapse of the late-aughts? A movie about it from the director of Anchorman, perhaps.
The first trailer for The Big Short, Adam McKay’s big movie about big banks and their big rip-off of the American public, from Michael Lewis, the author of The Blind Side and Moneyball, is here. And it’s got an Ocean’s 11 meets The Wolf of Wall Street vibe, but with some questionable hair pieces and a surprisingly great cast. All jokes aside, McKay’s film appears to have potential. Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Brad Pitt star as a group of men who figured out ahead of time that the housing market in the United States was about to crash, then used that information to bet against the American economy. It’s a based-on-truth story of American ingenuity, in so much as that ingenuity profits off the downfall of millions of people. But hey, that’s how America works sometimes.
Watch the first trailer for The Big Short below and beware, herein lie some bad hair pieces.
The Big Short is due in theaters December 11 in limited release with a wide release on December 23. Here’s the official synopsis:
When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball), and directed by Adam Mckay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) The Big Short stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.
