It’s Time to Choose Sides for Captain America: Civil War

In this new promo art for Captain America: Civil Warwhich began circulating online earlier today thanks to ComicBookMovie.com, we get to see what Marvel’s next big superhero clash has in store. The interesting part is that it shows off the two teams that are going to go to battle in the great disagreement between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. That is assuming that this art is real, which certainly appears to be the case.

Marvel Studios has been particularly tight-lipped about the details of the Civil War plot, even though the film wrapped principle photography last week. We learned a few things from some footage at D23, but the vast majority of the film remains a mystery. Today’s release of promotional art confirms a few things, which could be considered spoilers, but are really broad facts about the story. It confirms for us who is fighting on which side (and who hasn’t yet picked a side).

Up first is Team Iron Man, those loyal to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and in support of the Superhero Registration Act:

As expected, Stark’s closest allies are in tow. This includes War Machine (Don Cheadle), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Vision (Paul Bettany). The surprise is Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman. It was previously rumored that Black Panther was neutral in the conflict. If this art is to be trusted, it suggests that he has chosen a side. And it suggests that there are other characters — namely Spider-Man — who might end up being more neutral, or perhaps even sought after in an attempt to swing the balance of power, as was the case in the comic version of Civil War.

Here is Team Captain America, including Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and some trusted friends:

While it was previously rumored that Scarlett Witch would appear on Captain America’s side, this tells a slightly different story. Cap’s team includes Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). It also shows off Falcon’s drone buddy Redwing, who was mentioned at D23. It all begs the question: where do the likes of Scarlett Witch or Bruce Banner (who is rumored to be in the film somewhere) fit into the conflict?

Perhaps Marvel is saving a few fun secrets for later. I’m good with that. Assuming this art is legit, it’s very cool. Though it raises a number of interesting questions. I’m curious as to how Black Widow ended up siding with Stark instead of her buddy Steve. At the end of The Winter Soldier and throughout Age of Ultron, it’s clear that her friendship with Rogers and her distrust of the government are both pretty strong. That and she’s always been close to Hawkeye. The Scarlett Witch question is also fascinating, as she’s got a historical connection with Vision, which is at odds with the rumors that she ends up on the side of Team Cap. To say the very least, this release of art has accomplished two things: (a) it tells me that there will be plenty of build up and exposition early on in Civil War to explain how this fracture occurs in this manner and (b) it has me reaching for my Civil War comics for a little refresher. Even though the movie isn’t going to be a direct adaptation of the Civil War run, there’s still probably some value in revisiting.

Here’s a fourth and final piece, showing off a little bit more of the actual conflict:

Captain America: Civil War is due in theaters May 6, 2016. We’re expected a trailer sometime in the fall or winter, perhaps a teaser in the next few months followed by a longer trailer attached to Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December.
