Finders Keepers Trailer: A Supposedly Great Movie About a Severed Leg

The Orchard has released the first trailer for Finders Keepers, a movie that’s been on my mind since it premiered at Sundance in January. I didn’t get a chance to see it at the festival, where it made its debut, but almost every day I was in Park City I heard someone mention it. Perhaps I was simply spending too much time in the company of /Film’s Peter Sciretta, who absolutely loved it:

“The story offers much more depth than its “pulled from the headlines”  story might lead you to expect. In fact, it’s less about the sensationalistic hook and more about the compelling characters involved in this crazy story.  I love documentary films like King of Kong and Trekkies that let us explore the world of quirky “weirdos”. With Finders Keepers, producers Seth Gordin (King of Kong) and Adam Goldberg (The Goldbergs) give us a fascinating slice of moldy Americana.”

Our own Christopher Campbell also reviewed the movie on Nonfics:

“In Finders Keepers‘ way of veering close to sensationalism but not crossing the line, it’s akin to The Queen of Versailles for drawing us in with outrageous people and premise and then delivering a deeper and more sensitive take on fame, fortune, class, capitalism, justice and grief than is expected. It too starts out as stranger than fiction and then becomes more real than “reality,” a complex and complicated film that shows us common people in unusual circumstances, a portrait of America as familiar as it is uncanny.”

In case it’s not clear — or if you’re one of the few who reads this text before watching the trailer above — this is a movie about a man who finds another man’s mummified, previously severed leg inside of a grill he bought at a yard sale. This insane premise alone might be enough to power a solid doc, but there’s also some really interesting talent behind the project. Personally, I haven’t stopped thinking about Finders Keepers since the first time someone told me that it was great. Now I, and everyone else, will be able to see it when it hits limited release on September 25 and on-demand on October 2. Mark your calendars, because it’s about to get weird, y’all.
