Christian Bale to Star in Michael Mann's Upcoming 'Ferrari' Movie

Michael Mann & Christian Bale

Good news, Michael Mann fans - he has found his Enzo Ferrari. Over at Deadline, they're reporting that actor Christian Bale has "said yes" or agreed to play the lead role of Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann's upcoming Ferrari movie, about the life of the creator of the famous automobile company. The project has been in the works for a while, and while Bale is now involved, they interestingly mention that it still "isn’t set up [at a studio] just yet." They do say that it will start shooting next summer, so things are moving forward to make this Mann's next film following this dismal Blackhat. Hopefully this will turn out much better, but I really feel this story is much more suited to Mann's sensibilities than anything else. Read on.

In the Deadline story, they say that Mann has been working on this film "for close to 15 years, at one time in partnership with the late director Sydney Pollack." It's set in 1957, a year "where passion, failure, success and death and life all collided." Interestingly, back in 2011 we wrote about Michael Mann being involved in a project based on A.J. Baime's book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans. That sounds like a very similar story with a familiar concept, and maybe Mann was trying to explore his passions again, but it's interesting they note that this new one is specifically a Ferrari movie (even titled, supposedly, just Ferrari). We'll have to watch and see how this develops with Bale bringing it attention.

Michael Mann and Christian Bale previously worked together on Public Enemies. Bale's recently was in Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods & Kings and Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups. He also filmed The Big Short and is working with Andy Serkis on Jungle Book: Origins as Bagheera. This might be a good role for him.
