Steve Jobs Trailer: Aaron Sorkin Really Hates Tech Company Pioneers

If you watched the above trailer for Steve Jobs and thought it seems a lot like The Social Network but for Apple/Steve Jobs instead of Facebook/Mark Zuckerberg, that’s not a strange reaction. Aaron Sorkin wrote both movies and apparently has issues with pioneers of personal computing. As portrayed by Michael Fassbender — who seems good in the role despite the lack of resemblance — Jobs does not seem to be a likable character here at all.

In the director’s chair in place of The Social Network‘s David Fincher, though, is Danny Boyle (Fincher was actually originally attached but dropped out reportedly for not having demands met by Sony, which also wound up passing on the project anyway). While the trailer makes the movie appear to be a takedown of the late entrepreneur and marketing wiz, it should be noted that it’s based on a book — Walter Isaacson’s 2011 work of the same name, published days after Jobs’s death — that the subject approved of.

What we see here is Jobs fighting with Apple co-founder (and consultant on the movie) Steve Wozniak (Seth Rogen), dealing with a personal issue of having a daughter (Mackenzie Moss/Ripley Sobo/Perla Haney-Jardine) he won’t recognize as his own (rising star Katherine Waterston plays the girl’s mother) and of course facing challenges of running a company that’s trying to be at the forefront of its industry. Kate Winslet co-stars prominently in that level as Joanna Hoffman, a prominent part of Apple through the 1980s and apparently someone known for standing up to her boss.

The biopic will not be a full life story, though, as it’s limited to only three early, specific product launches and ends in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac. Maybe if it’s a hit we’ll get a sequel for the Macbook/iTunes/iPhone era.

Steve Jobs hits theaters on October 9th, a few days following the fourth anniversary of Jobs’s death.

Here is Jobs presenting the iMac at an event depicted in the movie:
