The next project for Jackie Chan is now in the works, with a new director officially attached. Deadline is reporting that STX Entertainment is finalizing a deal with director Martin Campbell, who will be at the helm of an adaptation starring Jackie Chan. The film will be titled The Foreigner, adapted from Stephen Leather's novel The Chinaman, first published in 2008. Campbell last made Green Lantern but has been stuck in "movie prison" ever since, and is also responsible for Casino Royale, Edge of Darkness and Vertical Limit. Word is that they're aiming to start production this fall, with deals being finalized with everyone now.

The Chinaman understood death.
Jungle-skilled, silent and lethal, he had killed for the Viet Cong and then for the Americans. He had watched helpless when his two eldest daughters had been raped and killed by Thai pirates.
Now all that was behind him. Quiet, hard-working and unassuming, he was building up his South London take-away business.
Until the day his wife and youngest daughter were destroyed by an IRA bomb in a Knightsbridge department store.
Then, simply but persistently, he began to ask the authorities who were the men responsible, what was being done. And was turned away, fobbed off, treated as a nuisance.
Which was when the Chinaman, denied justice, decided on revenge. And went back to war.
According to the details from Deadline, the film is being developed by STX Entertainment who has received "substantial slate financing from China" so there's some Chinese involvement (even though the title change makes it more hazy as to where he's from). Their description says that Chan will "play a humble restaurant owner in London's Chinatown who is forced to push his moral and physical boundaries to track down the group of rogue Irish terrorists responsible for the death of his beloved daughter after the justice system fails him." The script is being written by David Marconi and Peter Buchman. Chan has been taking on low profile roles recently, as well as dramatic work like Police Story: Lockdown. I'm curious to see how this turns out.
