London Has Fallen Trailer: Is This Another Fourth of July Gift?

Sorry to all you who wish this was “10 Downing Down” (or just “Downing Down”) — that’d be the sequel to White House Down that isn’t happening — instead of a sequel to Olympus Has Fallen. There really should be a rule that if one of a dueling movie set gets a sequel the other automatically gets one, too. Olympus Has Fallen surely succeeded in part because of the competition. This follow-up, London Has Fallen, could use the same challenge.

The dialogue-free trailer above is an international teaser that comes to us via Lionsgate’s UK branch (the US release is being handled by Focus Features/Gramercy Pictures), which is appropriate given the setting. But it’s also interesting that we get this trailer for a movie about the English capital succumbing to so much destruction the week that we celebrate the day we went to war with Britain and kicked their butt.

Not that we should take delight in even fictional terrorist attacks on our friend across the pond. Oh, wait, isn’t that actually the point of action movies like this, to be entertained by landmarks being blown up? And for a UK version of a trailer set in the UK about a UK disaster, this makes the movie look very America-centric. How many shots of Morgan Freeman as the Speaker of the House looking concerned do we need? I know there’s a special relationship between our countries, but still.

Oh right, he’s just concerned about the President of the United States, again played by Aaron Eckhart, as he’s in London for the funeral of the UK Prime Minister along with the rest of the allied leaders of the Western world. And those explosions seen in the trailer are attacks targeting all these leaders. I wonder if this thing would do better with the global box office (Olympus did better domestically, which seems rare for an action movie these days) if there was equal focus on all the involved heads of state.

London Has Fallen is directed by Swedish filmmaker Babak Najafi and also brings back Gerard Butler in the lead as the heroic secret service agent who will save POTUS and defeat the terrorists, again. The sequel opens in the US on January 22, 2016.
