“They really learned how to make this stuff work,” said actor Ben Affleck in an interview for EW’s upcoming Comic-Con issue. “Good is the new bad.”
I suppose this is supposed to mean that all comic book movies made around the time that, say, Affleck starred in 2003’s Daredevil were bad. And that all of the ones we get today, including the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in which Affleck plays Batman, are good.
This was a capper to what ended up being a smattering of interesting quotes from Affleck and his co-stars that were published alongside some new photos from Batman v Superman. If you got distracted by all of the promotional stills, you may have missed the quotes. So we’re going to explore both:
“Batman is basically the American version of Hamlet.” – Affleck
Warner Bros.
Okay, we get it. A bunch of people have remade and remixed the story of Batman to varying degrees of success. Though in my mind, Hamlet sets the bar a little high. Let’s go with “the American version of James Bond,” next time, to accommodate for that instance in which nipples were placed on a batsuit and George Clooney was placed inside.
“I love the fact that there was this Thomas Crowne Affair, Bond-y sexy scene that they wrote about two people who are pretending to be two different people who each know the secrets of the other person.” – Affleck
Entertainment Weekly/Warner Bros.
He’s referring to the above meeting between his silver fox Bruce Wayne and Gal Gadot as Diana Prince. Considering the fact that even Christopher Nolan couldn’t resist doing one of these scenes in The Dark Knight Rises between Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway, and Tim Burton made it happen in Batman Returns between Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfieffer, this seems to be the only kind of tete-a-tete that Batman can have with his beautiful co-stars. Like Affleck, I also applaud Zack Snyder’s innovation.
“It means that when it was supposed to look rainy and miserable, it had to be rainy and miserable. The long dark night of the soul and whatnot.” – Affleck on the rainy conditions of Gotham City.
Entertainment Weekly/Warner Bros.
I can’t wait to see all the whatnot in this movie.
“Batman v Superman is definitely more mankind’s perspective of Superman.” – Henry Cavill
Entertainment Weekly/Warner Bros.
Mankind’s vision appears to be, “Mmm, those arms.”
“…you can rest assured that the movie will feature that iconic chrome dome.” – EW caption
Entertainment Weekly/Warner Bros.
Whoa, spoilers.
Also, I can’t wait to see the Silicon Valley version of Lex Luthor. I wonder if he drives a Prius and recruits Bruce Wayne’s assistance in rebuilding Metropolis after they connected at an eco-philanthropy retreat several years ago. And if the film reveals that he invented LexBook, I’m out.
“I’ll be 10 years of superheroes by the end of this.” – Director Zack Snyder
Entertainment Weekly/Warner Bros.
The jury is still out as to whether or not that’s a good thing.
