You can do it, Duncan! Legendary's big new Warcraft movie is currently scheduled for release in June of 2016, meaning there's still 11 more months until it's fully finished and playing in theaters. However, director Duncan Jones is already eyeing something to fill his time for those next 11 months - possibly making his passion project sci-fi film Mute. During an interview with Duncan at Comic-Con, Empire heard from the Warcraft director that he's hoping to make it happen. "It's 11 months to sneak in my little indie sci-fi before Warcraft comes out… I got Moon done in 11 months." Well, here's hoping all the pieces are falling in place.
Ever since Moon made its mark in the film industry, Duncan has been trying to get Mute made. We've been covering details for years, and he even spoke just last year about trying to pull it off while working around Warcraft, saying he "may give Mute one more push before I put it on the Don Quixote shelf." Here's his full quote at Empire from Comic-Con this year to understand the context of what he's saying:
"Dark Horse and Glenn Fabry and myself have been working on the graphic novel for [Mute] for years now – literally years – and there's a very good chance, if I can squeeze [it in] in these 11 months, that you’ll see the film before you see the graphic novel."
So what is Mute about? Years ago when it was first revealed, Duncan described it as "a thriller that happens to take place in the future" and the plot is said to be about "a woman whose disappearance causes a mystery for her partner, a mute bartender. When she disappears, he has to go up against the city's gangsters." We posted about this concept art back in 2009, and also wrote about the project back then before the news of production being halted in early 2011. Hopefully this time it will actually come together, and it sounds like he's been working on securing the financing to make it happen. Obviously Duncan won't confirm that it will happen until everything is signed and set, but at least there's some optimism. Stay tuned for more updates.
