Disney Now Developing a Live-Action 'Sword in the Stone' Movie

Sword in the Stone

Another day, another remake. Another Disney live-action remake. This time it's Sword in the Stone, the original animated 1963 movie about King Arthur. The film is based on T.H. White's book of the same name, which is part of his series The Once and Future King, about King Arthur. The new feature will draw from the book as well, and Disney has hired Bryan Cogman, a writer-producer on HBO's "Game of Thrones", to write the script. This is yet another project from Disney taking one of their familiar animated movies and making it live-action, because why not - from Cinderella to The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Fantasia) to Beauty and the Beast (coming up). Below are two great tweets that nicely sum up our initial reaction to this news.

Here are the details on the new version (via THR). Disney is hiring screenwriter Bryan Cogman, putting him with producer Brigham Taylor, to create a new live-action take on Sword in the Stone. Cogman seems to be quite the geek, as he's also working on adapting Magic: The Gathering for Fox not to mention his "Game of Thrones" work. The original Disney animated Sword in the Stone movie was released in 1963 and featured a story where Merlin helped transform a boy into the great hero King Arthur. No details were provided yet on whether this new version will be another retelling of that exact story, or an updated take for modern times. Only time will tell once the script is done, approved, ready, and they find a director, and so on. Stay tuned.

The original Disney animated movie can be watched on Amazon or iTunes. What do you think of this news?
