Zootopia Trailer: Disney’s Next Animated Feature is Overly Explained

Disney has been making animated films with anthropomorphic animals since the beginning. Their main stable of iconic characters consists of talking, bipedal mice, ducks and whatever Goofy is (a dog, we know). So, it’s a little funny that the first preview for Zootopia is just an expository lesson in anthropomorphism and explanation of its animal-populated world.

It’s also strangely similar in its set up to another recent teaser for an upcoming Disney animated feature, Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur. In that one we’re informed that dinosaurs never became extinct and wound up co-existing with primitive man. Zootopia leaves out man altogether, stating that humans never happened.

Every other mammal has become a part of a seemingly perfect but not perfect civilization that very much resembles the books of Richard Scarry. It’s not often that we get anthropomorphic animal worlds where the characters are of different sizes. Micky Mouse is the same height as Donald Duck, for instance. Here we’ve got mice of normal size. No ducks, though.

Here is the official synopsis:

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery.

Zootopia, which is directed by Byron Howard (Bolt) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph) and written co-directed by Jared Bush (Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero), opens on March 4, 2016.
