As a former straight-edge kid — albeit not one nailed to the X, as it were — I’ve been curious about the latest from Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. They made American Splendor, one of the best comic book adaptations of all time, and now with Ten Thousand Saints I’d hoped they’d deliver the best movie possible about the NYC sXe scene of the 1980s.
But now I can’t watch the trailer for the movie, which debuted at Sundance this year, without thinking about the Spider-Man movie that can never be. Ten Thousand Saints star Asa Butterfield lost out on the superhero role, and I’m still disappointed about it. Now I see him in a trailer with the Manhattan skyline and a hairstyle reminiscent of Tobey Maguire’s during his emo Peter Parker phase in Spider-Man 3.
Also in the movie is Ethan Hawke, acting like the cool dad again and even uttering a line of dialogue nearly straight out of Boyhood. It looks more like Butterfield’s showcase as he navigates the hardcore punk shows and might seem to commit a straight-edge no-no by having sex with his Ender’s Game co-star Hailee Steinfeld, who we learn from the trailer becomes pregnant. But the official synopsis for the movie clears that up for us.
Via Facebook:
Jude (Asa Butterfield) is a teenage boy who is trying to reconnect with his father Les (Ethan Hawke) in 1987 Manhattan. When Jude’s friend, Teddy (Avan Jogia), dies of a drug overdose, Jude finds himself befriending a group of friends who are against drugs, alcohol, profanity and sex and live for punk-style rock music. When he meets Eliza (Hailee Steinfeld), who is sixteen years old and is pregnant with Teddy’s child, he and Les are forced to be her rock as she struggles through her pregnancy and early motherhood while Jude struggles with his feelings for her and his relationship with his father.
Ten Thousand Saints, based on a book by Eleanor Henderson, hits theaters on August 14th.
