Rock the Kasbah Trailer: Good Morning, Afghanistan!

It’s been a while since Barry Levinson made a great movie, and while Rock the Kasbah is potentially not one of his better efforts, at least it stars Bill Murray. The comedic actor plays a tour manager who is stranded in Afghanistan when the singer he’s brought there (Zooey Deschanel) takes off with his money and passport. Now he’s a fish out of water but it might all be good fortune when he meets a young local with a chance at stardom.

This is a mix of comedy and politics/war that we see occasionally from the filmmaker, but the question is whether this could be a Good Morning, Vietnam for a new generation. Or will it be me more along the quality of Man of the Year and the Hollywood-set What Just Happened? There’s a strong cast here, including Danny McBride, Scott Caan and Bruce Willis, reuniting Murray with his Moonrise Kingdom co-star.

And it’s written by Mitch Glazer, who has previously worked with Murray on Scrooged and Lost in Translation and will again for December’s A Very Murray Christmas. More reason to think of this as a Bill Murray movie more than or at least as much as a Levinson film.

“Rock the Kasbah” is the story of Richie Lanz, a rock manager with a golden ear and a taste for talent, who has seen better times. When he takes his last remaining client on a USO tour of Afghanistan, she gets cold feet and leaves him penniless and without his passport in Kabul. While trying to find his way home, Richie befriends a band of misfits and discovers a young girl with an extraordinary voice. Against all odds, Richie will take his last shot at creating an unlikely superstar.

Rock the Kasbah opens theatrically on October 23rd.
