Nicolas Winding Refn Hints That His Next Film Might Be Set in Tokyo

Nicolas Winding Refn

We're still curious to see how Nicolas Winding Refn's The Neon Demon turns out (see the first look photos here), but there's already early details trickling out about his next film. Our friend Steve from Collider was recently talking with Nicolas Winding Refn during an interview for The Neon Demon and asked him about projects coming up. Refn revealed that he's looking at making a spy movie called The Avenging Silence next, and that it might be set in Tokyo, which we've heard before. It turns out this may be the same film he talked about in 2013, a sort-of sequel to 2009's Valhalla Rising taking that character to Tokyo.

Refn would only reveal minor details in the interview, but he did say it might a spy movie and that it might involve Mads Mikkelsen's character "One Eye" first seen in Valhalla Rising. "I had this idea of Mads Mikklesen to go back to the origins of this character. But make the movie in Tokyo," is what he said two years ago. Refn goes on to explain in the new Collider interview that this character will show up again:

"Yeah, it’s basically a character that appears in my other movies that will now appear again. Having done The Neon Demon, which was predominantly women protagonists, but the character that Mads [Mikkelsen] plays in Valhalla Rising, Ryan [Gosling] plays him in Drive or Vithaya [Pansringarm] plays him in Only God Forgives, I want to make a new movie with that character."

From the sounds of it, that does seem like the Valhalla Rising sequel and it might be called The Avenging Silence. One Eye heads to Tokyo, in the future, to avenge… silently? Who knows. We'll find out… in the future, too. But it might not be next for Refn after all. "I think it probably will be… but I haven't decided yet. There are some other things I'm working on." This is the way he talks and you never know, but he does end up making films, and The Neon Demon is shot and should be coming out soon enough. Refn may just be saying he's got an idea similar to what he's done before, but from the sounds of it this could be that Valhalla Rising sequel. If he casts Mads Mikkelsen again that will make all the difference. Stay tuned for updates.
