Claire Denis to Make English-Language Debut with New Sci-Fi Film

Claire Denis

Always more science fiction! French director Claire Denis is a talented filmmaker that we hope more and more people are always introduced to, and with this news about her next project, she might get even more attention. Screen Daily is reporting that Claire Denis is set to direct her first English-language feature, after 11 other feature films. It doesn't have a title yet (of course!), but it's apparently a sci-fi story set in space, beyond our own solar system in a "future that seems like the present." Denis is also writing the script with acclaimed British novelist Zadie Smith and her husband, writer Nick Laird. Bring on more sci-fi. Read on.

Denis seems to be going all out with this new sci-fi project, which is why we should be paying attention. I love that filmmakers always seem to end up choosing sci-fi when they want to be really ambitious. Denis is organizing and currently working with an eclectic team of collaborators that includes Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, known for his Tate Modern piece The Weather Project, the astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau, known for his work on black holes and cosmology, and singer/songwriter Stuart Staples of indie band Tindersticks, who previously provided music for Denis' films White Material and The Intruder. Producing the film are Oliver Dungey (Miss Julie), Laurence Clerc and Olivier Thery Lapiney from Paris-based Alcatraz Films, and Claudia Steffen and Christoph Friedel of Pandora Filmproduktion.

It kind of sounds like Claire Denis finally saw Jodorowsky's Dune and got inspired to make her ambitious sci-fi film. For those unfamiliar with Claire Denis' work, her feature filmography is fantastic and some of her most recent work is worth getting into: Bastards (or Les Salauds), White Material, 35 Shots of Rum, The Intruder. I've been exploring more of her past work recently and I'm anxious to find out what this project is all about. Producer Dungey: "I am delighted that Claire has been tempted to cross the channel and make a film in English; she is one of the greats of contemporary cinema and she’s assembled a quite extraordinary team to make exactly the kind of ambitious film that audiences cherish – completely original, genuinely pushing the boundaries of art and science and, above all, extremely entertaining." Stay tuned for updates.
