Sony
Two months ago, it seemed pretty likely that Drew Goddard would be writing and directing the next Spider-Man reboot. Today, he’s not even on a shortlist of filmmakers reported by Deadline.
There are six names, two of whom make up a duo, and they’re all white, all relative strangers to action and all likely cheap hires who won’t get to offer much creative input into the one movie let alone the franchise. If these are Sony’s top contenders, they’re clearly thinking more about Spidey’s comedy sense than his stunt work.
Here are the basics on each contender. If you had to choose, with a gun to your head, whom would you pick?
John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein: Starting with the duo, these guys just finished their feature directorial debut with another reboot, Vacation, and buzz is very positive on it. Daley has the geek cred, sort of, from playing one of the titular geeks of Freaks and Geeks, but they’re more known for their writing, specifically on so-so stuff like Horrible Bosses, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.
Jared Hess: He directed Napoleon Dynamite, which is enough for me to skip right over this name with disgust that he’d even be considered. It’s not like he’s redeemed himself yet.
Jonathan Levine: The only one on this list who picky critics would embrace, he’s earned much respect from All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, The Wackness and 50/50 but I don’t recall much love for his YA zombie adaptation, Warm Bodies. The thing is, I like that movie and believe it to be the biggest reason why Levine should get the job — if Sony was going for more of that Amazing Spider-Man rom-com stuff. Which they supposedly aren’t.
Ted Melfi: I still haven’t watched St. Vincent, which had a mixed reception. Still, I can’t imagine the studio going with such a newbie. Unless he can get Bill Murray for the villain.
Jason Moore: He gave us Pitch Perfect, but who really credits him for why we all love that movie so much? His next movie is Sisters, which I’m hearing bad buzz on. He’s probably better off with the other comic book movie he’s been linked to, Archie.
