In celebration of May the 4th, the unofficial Star Wars holiday, Vanity Fair has released a slew of new photographs taken on the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz. These photos not only feed the beast that is our need for more information about the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed film, they also confirm a number of things that have long been rumored.
This includes confirmation of the following:
1. Adam Driver is playing Kylo Ren
In the caption for the image of Adam Driver on set (photo seen above), VF confirms that Driver is playing the hooded bad guy Ren. And yes, he’s the guy with the three-pronged lightsaber from the first Force Awakens trailer. He’s a powerful playing in the First Order, which is the group that has risen following the fall of the Empire.
2. Lupita Nyong’o’s character will be entirely C.G.I
Nyong’o is seen in the photo spread with the now-familiar motion capture dots covering her face, which confirms that her character will be entirely computer generated. It is also revealed that her character, called Maz Kanata, has a pirate castle that includes a rogue’s gallery of smugglers. Whether or not she’s on the side of the Resistance (the offspring of the Rebel Alliance) remains to be seen, but it does all give credence to the theory that it’s her character handing the lightsaber to Leia in the second Force Awakens trailer.
3. J.J. Abrams wanted to kill Jar Jar Binks
In a moment of heroism for fans, Abrams said that he wanted to plant the bones of everyone’s least favorite Gungan in one of the scenes of The Force Awakens. Even if he didn’t ultimately accomplish this, we can all appreciate the sentiment.
4. Poe Dameron is one handsome Resistance pilot
Not as much to learn here as there is to enjoy. He’s a handsome devil, that Oscar Isaac:
