It looks like Hollywood may be running out of well-known titles from the past to remake, because now they're reaching into the late 90s for a cult sci-fi horror film for inspiration. THR reports Lionsgate is developing a remake of the 1997 flick Cube. The film is being described as a reimagining of the original film and is going by the title Cubed this time. The first film came from Splice director Vincenzo Natali, but this time it will be up and coming director Saman Kesh behind the camera to update the project for audiences 18 years later. In addition, Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts is on board to produce with Roy Lee. Read on!
If you want to get acquainted with Saman Kesh, here's his acclaimed short Controller:
The new film will use the same premise as the original film with seven strangers finding themselves trapped in a giant cube structure. Soon they come to encounter artificial intelligence and the birth of a new digital race, challenging humanity's existence and purpose. The script comes from Philip Gawthorne (One Day in Hell, Modern Life is Rubbish), working from an original take on the material from Kesh himself. As someone who hasn't seen the original Cube, I can't say whether or not updating this film such a short time after the original is necessary, but these days it doesn't really matter. Thoughts?
