Jeff Nichols Next Directing 'Loving' with Joel Edgerton & Ruth Negga

Jeff Nichols

While we wait for Warner Bros to figure out what to do with Jeff Nichols' Midnight Special, the filmmaker already has another project lined up. A press release sent out has announced that Nichols is attached to direct a film called Loving, starring Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, based on the couple behind the seminal 1967 civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia. Production is already slated to start shooting in September later this year in Virginia, meaning this is definitely next for Jeff Nichols, and Warner Bros is likely going to push back Midnight Special until after he finishes all the major work on this film. "I was struck by the simplicity of the Loving's story, and I hope to make this a painfully beautiful film," Nichols comments. Sounds good.

Richard and Mildred Loving were married in June of 1958. As a result, authorities broke into their home, arrested them, and they were sentenced to a year in the state penitentiary. This sentence was suspended on the condition that they be exiled from the state of Virginia. Richard and Mildred would spend the next nine years fighting to get home. All of this, because Richard was a white man and Mildred a black woman. LOVING is a story about marrying the one you want and finding the one you need.

Jeff Nichols' Loving will be produced by Sarah Green, Colin Firth, Ged Doherty, Nancy Buirski, Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf. The film is inspired by the documentary, The Loving Story directed by Nancy Buirski who joins the producing team on the narrative feature. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Jack Turner will executive produce. The film was developed by Raindog and The Zoo. Big Beach is financing the film. Joel Edgerton is also starring in Jeff Nichols' Midnight Special, moving right into this. Ruth Negga comes from "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", plus she was in World War Z and Jimi: All Is by My Side. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out, Nichols is one of my favorite filmmakers and I'm always excited about his work.
