You might remember last fall that Idris Elba let slip that he and Tom Hiddleston were going to pop up in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, for those of us who saw the early showings of the movie last night around the United States, we noticed a distinct lack of Loki in the film, though Elba's character Heimdall does get some brief screentime. Well, Elba wasn't lying about Hiddleston shooting stuff for the Marvel sequel, but it turns out the scene they shot just didn't work in the final cut. Joss Whedon was asked about the lack of Loki in the final cut of Age of Ultron, and he told MTV why the decision was made.
Here's what Whedon told MTV about the scene not making the cut:
"We did shoot something and it didn’t play. The movie has so much, is so filled and we didn’t want it to feel overstuffed. I really wanted to have Loki in it but I understood the decision, that it was just like, ‘Now there are too many voices in the chorus.’ At some point the embarrassment of riches is actually embarrassing."
It's easy to tell where Loki would have come into play once you see Age of Ultron, but like Whedon says, it likely would have been too much in an already packed sequel. Plus, we're sure Loki will get plenty of screentime when Thor: Ragnarok comes around, especially considering how Thor: The Dark World ended. But what about this footage that was cut? Will we ever see it? The best bet would be that it pops up as a deleted scene on the home video release of Age of Ultron, and there have been even been rumblings of an extended cut of the film hitting Blu-Ray and DVD, but we'll have to wait and see. Anyone bummed?
