Tom Cruise May Sing Again in Disney's 'Bob the Musical' Comedy

In a surprising turn back in 2012, superstar Tom Cruise ventured into musical territory for the 80s rock infused Broadway adaptation Rock of Ages. The actor wasn't actually all that bad, and was easily the best part of a fun but somewhat messy musical. Now it looks like he might head back to the genre as The Wrap reports Cruise is circling the title role in the gestating Bob the Musical. He's not officially attached yet, but Disney has been circling Cruise for the role since January, and it sounds like he's still interested. Of course, there's plenty of movies Cruise is linked to, but they don't all come to fruition with him involved.

It certainly sounds like it would be an interesting project to see Cruise tackle as it follows a regular guy who, after a blow to the head, suddenly can hear the inner songs of everyone’s hearts. With this newfound attribute, his life is instantly turned into a real-life musical and he's not too happy about it at all. Besides Rock of Ages, Cruise hasn't taken on a straight up comedy since Tropic Thunder, one of my favorite roles he's taken on in his career, but I wish he would alternate move often between comedies, drama and action movies, though Edge of Tomorrow had a nice blend of comedy and action at least.

Phil Lord & Chris Miller were once linked to the project back in 2010, but they fell away from the project. The last update came last year when Frozen composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Rock of Ages scribe Allan Loeb boarded the project, but the former Oscar-winning duo isn't mentioned in this latest update, so they may not be on board anymore. But in addition to Cruise circling the lead role, The Artist director Michel Hazanavicious is also being courted to direct the film. It sounds like the pieces for this one are still coming together, so we'll see what happens.
