Phil Lord & Chris Miller Working on an Animated Spider-Man Movie

Spider-Man

Fans of Spider-Man already had their dreams come true when Sony Pictures struck a deal to have Marvel Studios share the wallcrawling superhero so the character can exist in the Marvel cinematic universe and share the screen with The Avengers. But now it looks like they're going to get even more webslinging fun for the big screen as Sony officially announced today that The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller are working on the first animated big screen Spider-Man movie. Tom Rothman, the new chairman of Sony Pictures, made the major announcement at CinemaCon today with some details.

Lord & Miller will write the treatment and produce the film, but it doesn't sound like they're attached to direct. Unlike the new live-action Spider-Man who will be introduced in Captain America: Civil War, this animated Spider-Man will exist independently of the projects being produced by Marvel Studios. That means nothing that happens in the animated Spidey universe will impact live-action Spider-Man and vice versa. That means this is the first time we'll get two of the same superhero in two different storylines running at the same time, just like comic books have done for years.

While I can't say that I'm thrilled that Sony is milking Spider-Man to death like this (I'm not surprised), the saving grace is that Lord & Miller are the ones behind this animated version. And considering the magic they've done with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The LEGO Movie, I'm willing to give them a chance at anything before I pass judgment. An animated universe means that we could get some more fantastical elements of Spider-Man from the comics that we might otherwise not see in the live-action films that Sony has planned. This animated Spider-Man movie will arrive on July 20th, 2018. Stay tuned.
