Last fall we learned that Ricky Gervais would be getting behind the camera again as director of Special Correspondents , a remake of a French comedy that the comedian also wrote himself. The film follows Eric Bana as a struggling New York-based radio journalist whose arrogance and decadent lifestyle has hindered his career. So he decides to fake front line war reports from the comfort of his hideout above a Spanish restaurant in Manhattan. Now Deadline reports Netflix, who is only increasing their presence in distribution, has landed rights to the comedy to premiere in 2016 exclusively on the streaming service.
Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos says, "Special Correspondents is classic Ricky Gervais; smart social satire with heart. It’s the kind of great grown-up comedy that studios rarely make anymore, one that’s perfect for Netflix members around the world.” As we said when the news was announced last fall, this sounds similar to Wag the Dog, but with Gervais' comedic sensibilities on the page and behind the camera, it should feel remarkably different. Gervais has directed plenty of television before with episodes of his own Netflix series "Derek" and "Life's Too Short" under his belt. But he's a solid film director too with the coming-of-age Cemetery Junction and sorely underrated Invention of Lying in his past. We'll definitely be looking forward to seeing this one next year.
