Marvel Needs the Rights from Universal to Make Solo 'Hulk' Movie

Ever since Mark Ruffalo stepped up to play the Hulk in The Avengers, and the character became a favorite among Marvel fans, there's been plenty of demand for another solo movie for the big guy. While there have been rumblings from Ruffalo and even Lou Ferrigno about another Hulk movie coming soon, there hasn't been any solid development on that front. There have been rumors of a lead-up to Planet Hulk, even involving Guardians of the Galaxy , but James Gunn has denied that plan adamantly. Well, now we know why there hasn't been progress on a solo adventure for the Hulk: Marvel doesn't have the rights.

Yes, Marvel Studios has the right to use Hulk in The Avengers franchise, but Universal, who made the Edward Norton version with ties into the Marvel cinematic universe, still holds the rights for standalone Hulk movies. Ruffalo confirmed this fact (via Collider) while doing press rounds for The Avengers: Age of Ultron, "As far as a Hulk movie, a standalone Hulk movie, Marvel doesn’t really have the rights to that yet. That’s still Universal’s property, so there’s that issue. That’s a big impediment to moving forward with that. Now I don’t think that’s insurmountable, by the way, but I don’t know where it’s going from here for me."

So not only is there no plan for Hulk yet, but Marvel (or Disney) would have to cough up some money in order to make a standalone movie happen. The studio has done that before with The Avengers and Iron Man 3, the rights to which were still situated at Paramount Pictures years ago, so this wouldn't be out of the ordinary. But at the same time, Marvel has quite a full slate coming up with Captain America: Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel and The Avengers: Infinity War Part I & Part II, so there's really no urgency for Hulk to venture out on his own yet. Stay tuned.
