Ian McKellen to Play Cogsworth in Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast'

British actor Ian McKellen has become very well known for his franchise roles as Magneto in the X-Men films and Gandalf in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and now he's heading into Disney territory for a perfect role. Variety reports McKellen will play the clock Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast . Cogsworth was the beast's butler before the curse placed over the castle turned everyone into various pieces of furniture. In the animated version from 1991, the clock was a rather worrisome uppity little fellow, constantly clashing with the suave energetic Lumiere, the candelabra, a role that has yet to be cast.

The cast of Beauty and the Beast is pretty impressive so far with Emma Watson and Dan Stevens taking the title roles, Luke Evans playing the brutish Gaston and Josh Gad playing his weasel of a sidekick Le Fou. Emma Thompson has also been cast as Mrs. Potts and Kevin Kline will play Belle's father. Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) is directing this new live-action musical version of the classic tale, and it's one of many new live-action adaptations of Disney films on the way, which also includes the elephant tale Dumbo to be directed by Tim Burton, the recently announced adaptation of Mulan , also the live-action Winnie the Pooh film, and the recently announced new version of Pinocchio . Will they all work?
