Animated Spider-Man Movie on the Way From LEGO Movie Team

Here’s some dessert to go with your Spider-Man shortlist news this evening: Sony’s working on another Spider-Man movie due out in 2018, almost exactly one year following the initial installment of the next reboot. This one will be an animated feature, and it won’t have anything to do with the live-action version of the character or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We can probably think of it akin to how The LEGO Batman Movie has nothing to do with Ben Affleck’s continuity as the Caped Crusader.

Speaking of the LEGO franchise, this long-in-development but newly announced animated feature involves the creative talents of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, a duo that seems to be either working on or wanted by every major blockbuster property in Hollywood. They’ve still got the Jump Street and LEGO movies and are now working on a treatment for a live-action The Flash movie that will be a part of that Affleck continuity. Rumor is they’ve been in talks for a Ghostbusters installment, too.

So far, Lord and Miller are only on board the animated Spider-Man as treatment writers and producers, but of course Sony is also interested in them directing. Why wouldn’t they be? But it shouldn’t matter. As Spider-Man expert Dave Gonzalez astutely hinted at on Twitter this evening, the main thing with this other movie could be that Sony gets to have a separate Spidey franchise going that they don’t have to split profits on with Marvel. They probably just can’t have the same actor who plays him on screen do the voice here. Maybe they’ll even have this be the place for the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man on the big screen.

Lord and Miller will be joined by live-action Spider-Man producers Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. The character will show up in theaters in the flesh again first, on July 28, 2017. The animated feature is scheduled for July 20, 2018.
