Back in February, there was a lot of buzz about Power Rangers , but that's because there was a gritty, R-rated short film that went viral online. But in case you forgot there's a real feature film adaptation of the action television series in the works at Lionsgate, and it sounds like the studio has found their director with The Wrap reporting Project Almanac director Dean Israelite is currently in talks to get behind the camera. The film keeps the mythology of the show intact by following a new group of high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those new powers to save the world.
Apparently Israelite was courted to direct several big movies at other studios, though specific titles aren't mentioned, but he was waiting for the right project. While I'm not sure I would call a new Power Rangers movie the best option to follow what was a decent, original time travel adventure, it will likely open some new doors for the filmmaker if it turns out to be good. The script comes from X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, and we're not entirely sure what to expect from this new big screen attempt at Power Rangers. Lionsgate already has the film set for release on July 22nd, 2016 .
