Last summer we learned that Disney was working on a live-action retelling of another one of their classic animated films, the flying elephant tale Dumbo . Transformers franchise writer Ehren Kruger was hired to write the script and also produce the film with Justin Springer (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion), and now The Wall Street Journal is reporting director Tim Burton is returning to the craze he helped kick off at Disney back in 2010 with Alice in Wonderland by getting behind the camera for this new take on the circus fairytale of sorts. And considering Burton's obsession with dark circus visuals, that's a pretty perfect fit. More below!
However, the film is still early in development, and while we know it will mix live-action with computer generated effects, probably not unlike Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book in production now, there aren't any details on how this version will differ from the original. Remember, Dumbo only ran 64 minutes as a feature film, so the script will have to stretch out the story another 30 minutes at least to satisfy audiences. Surely Disney is happy to have Burton back at the studio considering how massive a success Alice in Wonderland turned out to be, but I hope it's better than Burton's recent fare. Thoughts?
