Kathryn Bigelow's Next Movie Will Be About POW Bowe Bergdahl

Last summer both directors Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) and Todd Fields (Little Children) were said to be developing films about the headline-making Army sergeant Bowe Bergdahl after the United States government exchanged five captured, high-ranking Taliban operatives in order to get the captured American prisoner of war back from Taliban captivity. Now it appears Bigelow will follow through as a Deadline feature that has Mike Fleming yammering with former Variety editor Peter Bart reveals the director has put the thriller Triple Frontier on the backburner yet again to focus on the Bergdahl project.

In the wake of the success of American Sniper, this seems like a smart move for Bigelow, especially considering the controversial subject matter. Following the exchange for Bergdahl's release, there was a wave of outrage as accusations of Bergdahl deserting his base voluntarily surfaced, which raised questions as to his role in the war and the value of the Taliban prisoners exchanged in order to secure his release. The film is still untitled, but the script hails from Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty writer Mark Boal, and studios should be scrambling to pick it up very soon. As for the Todd Fields' project, it remains to be see whether it will move forward, especially if Bigelow's gets off the ground first. Stay tuned.
