Even though Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn't slated to arrive for nine months, and we only just confirmed Looper director Rian Johnson would be at the helm of Star Wars: Episode VIII, coming in May of 2017, that's not stopping the rumors from starting on who will be at the helm of Star Wars: Episode IX . After all, Disney wants a new film from the galaxy far, far away arriving every year (like Star Wars: Rogue One in 2016) for the foreseeable future, so why wouldn't they be planning ahead? And Latino Review has the first rumor of a frontrunner director for Episode IX as The Force Awakens helmer J.J. Abrams.
Again, this is just a rumor for now, and since it's so early, take it with a huge grain of salt. As of now, I'm inclined to believe that while the studio may want Abrams back for Star Wars: Episode IX, that they may not get him. Notice that Abrams was not part of the producing team announced for Episode VIII with the official announcement of the release date last week. But maybe he just wants a full break from the franchise before returning to helm the final chapter of the new trilogy. Anyway, this is a rumor that was apparently verified with multiple sources naming him as the frontrunner, but we've got plenty of time to see what happens. And maybe it all depends on how the audience reacts to The Force Awakens. Thoughts?
