Another interesting casting development with regards to the completely unnecessary Magnificent Seven remake in the works. Variety is reporting that Ethan Hawke is one of the latest actors to join the ensemble cast lining up for this western. MGM, who released John Sturges' original Magnificent Seven in 1960, is developing this remake and currently has Antoine Fuqua set to direct. Fuqua previously directed Hawke and Denzel Washington in Training Day in 2001, and the two actors will be re-uniting with Fuqua for yet another project now over 10 years later. While this remake is pointless, at least the cast doesn't seem so bad.
Reports are confirming that the ensemble cast of Fuqua's new Magnificent Seven, from a screenplay by Nic Pizzolatto reworked by John Lee Hancock, includes: Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt and Haley Bennett. So far. I'm sure we'll be hearing more names soon if production is slated to start this year. Magnificent Seven, based on the story from Akira Kurosawa's classic Seven Samurai, is a wild west story of seven gunslingers who protect an oppressed Mexican village from a group of outlaws. This is another one of those remakes that should just go away, but seems to keep progressing with casting being finalized. Variety says Hawke is in "final negotiations". If they keep getting good names like this, I may be interested after all.
Ethan Hawke was nominated for an Oscar this year for his supporting role in Richard Linklater's Boyhood. Recently he's been in Ten Thousand Saints, Good Kill, Cymbeline, Predestination, Getaway and The Purge.
